What is a Hydraulic Rotator?

A hydraulic rotator is a mechanical component powered by a machine's hydraulic system that allows attachments—such as grapples, clamshell buckets, or shears—to rotate infinitely (360 degrees).

By providing continuous rotation without tangling the hydraulic hoses, rotators allow operators to position attachments with absolute precision. This eliminates the need to move the entire base machine to achieve the correct angle, significantly reducing fuel consumption, ground damage, and cycle times.

How Does a Hydraulic Rotator Work?

The core function of a hydraulic rotator relies on a complex internal system of channels and a swivel joint.

Pressurized hydraulic fluid is pumped from the base machine into the rotator. The internal swivel joint allows the fluid to pass through to the attachment (for example, to open and close a grapple's jaws) while simultaneously allowing the outer housing to rotate endlessly. The rotational force (torque) is generated either by a vane mechanism or a gear/piston motor inside the rotator body.

  1. Axial Load Capacity: This is the maximum weight the rotator can hang (dynamic) or withstand when pressed into the ground (static). Ensure the rotator's load rating exceeds the combined weight of your attachment and the maximum expected payload.

  2. Mounting Type: Decide between a pendulum mount (dangling, great for absorbing shock in forestry) or a rigid mount (fixed to the excavator stick, essential for digging and demolition).

  3. Torque Requirements: If you need to rotate a heavy load against resistance (like twisting a log out of a pile), you need a rotator with a high torque rating.

  4. Hydraulic Flow and Pressure: The rotator must match your machine’s hydraulic output. Sending too much flow will cause the attachment to spin uncontrollably and overheat the oil, while too little pressure will result in weak rotation.
